Tom Kilmer

Owner

Tom was born and raised in Fairmont, West Virginia, where he spent much of his childhood in his father’s machine shop. There, he learned to operate nearly every piece of equipment, laying the foundation for a lifelong passion for the automotive repair industry. Tom graduated from Fairmont Senior High School in 1970 and went on to attend Northwood University, where he earned an Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Marketing Management and a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences in Business Management.

Tom built a successful career working with several local Grand Rapids dealerships. Driven by his enduring interest in automotive repair, Tom and his wife, Marcia, opened Grand Rapids Motorcar in 2005. Together, they have built both a thriving business and a family, raising four children and enjoying time with their eight grandchildren.

Kathy Martin | Grand Rapids Motorcar

Kathy Martin

Office Manager

Kathy was born in Wichita, Kansas, and moved to Belmont, Michigan at a young age. She graduated from Rockford High School in Rockford, Michigan, and went on to build a successful career primarily in the medical and management fields. In 2013, Kathy joined the team at Grand Rapids Motorcar, where her experience, organization, and dedication quickly made her an invaluable asset in her role as Office Manager.

Outside of work, Kathy enjoys gardening, tackling home improvement projects, and spending quality time with her family. She is the proud mother of twins—a son and a daughter.

 

Rob Sperring | Grand Rapids Motorcar

Rob Sperring

Service Manager

Rob is an ASE and State of Michigan certified technician who’s been in the Auto Repair industry for over 20 years. Born and raised in Southern California until age 14, he spent his high school years in Pennsylvania. After graduating from Bishop Egan High School in 1993, he moved to West Michigan and enrolled at GRCC Tech Center. After receiving Auto Repair training and licensing, he started changing oil and working his way up in local car dealerships. Rob continued to earn certifications and build his career. He came to work for Tom and GRMC in 2007 as an Auto Technician and was offered the Service Manager position a few months later. He married his best friend Becky; they have four sons and a daughter and live in Grandville. Outside the shop, Rob enjoys spending time with his family, working on house projects, and watching his kids play Soccer.

Lisa brings an unmatched level of professionalism, positivity, and care to her work. Her genuine commitment to our customers helps set the tone for the high level of service we strive to provide every single day.

Lisa is a proud mom of three and grandmother to five. Her love for cars began early, inspired by her dad who was always tinkering in the garage. Lisa enjoys spending time outdoors, cooking, traveling, and making memories with her family and friends. She’s also a passionate crafter—a passion that began in childhood and has since grown into a fun and creative side hustle.

 

Cody Anderson | Grand Rapids Motorcar

Cody Anderson

Service Advisor

Cody grew up in Northeast Michigan and graduated from Whittemore-Prescott High School with a graduating class of only 53 students. He then went on to Delta College and earned a degree in Automotive Services. After college, he started his career as an ASE Certified technician before transitioning to Service Advisor/Customer Service over 10 years ago. Cody and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Lowell. Cody & Jennifer were foster parents for several years. They adopted two young boys who are siblings; Justin and Jayden. They also have a biological son, Walter. Cody enjoys spending time with his family, camping, and doing outdoor activities. He also enjoys hunting and fishing and looks forward to his boys participating as they get a little older. Cody joined GRMC in October 2020.

 

Sam Sandoval | Grand Rapids Motorcar

Sam Sandoval

Shop Foreman

Sam is an ASE Master and State of Michigan certified technician who’s been in the automotive industry for over 20 years. He was raised in Peoria AZ, where he worked on cars at a very young age in his father's shop. After graduating from Peoria High School in 1998, Sam took his four years of Automotive training to an apprenticeship with an independent repair shop, where he sharpened his skills. In 2000, Sam and his loving wife Kimberly moved to MI. He came to work for GRMC in 2008 and has become our shop foreman and lead diagnostic tech. Sam enjoys spending time with his wife and three children when he is not working. He also enjoys spending time with his congregation taking part in spiritual activities.

 

Scott Kipfmueller | Grand Rapids Motorcar

Scott Kipfmueller

Technician

Scott is an ASE Master and State of Michigan certified technician with over 30 years of experience in the auto repair industry. He grew up in Frankenmuth, MI, and graduated from Frankenmuth High School in 1987. After graduation, he went to work right away in a GM dealership. In 2005, Scott and his wife, Cathy, moved to West Michigan, and Scott began working for another GM dealership. He came to work for GRMC in 2009. Scott recently moved to our other building adjacent to the main building, where this new venture will allow him to fully showcase his skills and passion for classic car repairs. Scott enjoys snowmobiling, fishing, camping, and traveling during his time off.

Tom is an ASE Master and State of Michigan certified technician who’s worked in the automotive industry for over 25 years. Tom grew up in Walker, MI, and graduated from the University of Northwestern Ohio with a bachelor’s degree in High-Performance Automotive. Tom joined GRMC in August 2019 and has quickly become a very valuable asset. He is a top-notch diagnostic tech and European repair expert. Tom and his wife, Amanda, have a son, Logan, and a daughter, Blakelyn. Tom loves participating in outdoor activities. He and his family enjoy running, hiking, mountain biking, and camping. He is also an avid hunter and fisherman.

 

Jake Vath | Grand Rapids Motorcar

Jake Vath

Technician

Jake is an ASE and State of Michigan certified  technician. He graduated from Kenowa Hills High School in 2015 and went on to complete the Automotive Program at Grand Rapids Community College. Jake joined the Grand Rapids Motorcar team in September 2019 and has proven to be a valuable addition through his skill, dedication, and strong work ethic.

Jake and his wife, Lexi, were married in 2021 and make their home in Grand Rapids. Outside of work, Jake enjoys spending time outdoors, especially fishing.

 

Gavin Fish | Grand Rapids Motorcar

Gavin Fish

Technician

A graduate of Central Montcalm High School in Stanton, he initially pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Kettering University. During his time there, he discovered a stronger passion for hands-on work, leading him to shift gears and earn an Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology from the University of Northwestern Ohio. Gavin is an ASE Master Mechanic, an impressive achievement that makes him one of only three ASE Master Technicians to graduate from Central Montcalm High School. His lifelong love for automobiles is evident in both his education and his hobbies. Outside the shop, Gavin enjoys fishing and working on his personal vehicles, especially his 1982 Chevy Scottsdale. Gavin lives in Stanton with his wife Megan, his high school sweetheart, and their dog, Chevy.
